Sathorn & Silom
Sathorn Avenue is bounded by two parts, Sathorn North and Sathorn South. The northern part of the avenue begins at the southern end of the huge Lumpini Park, a real Central Park in Bangkok that offers a green area in the middle of skyscrapers. Sathorn Road, a very wide avenue, is the most famous in the capital, served at the northern end by the MRT (underground metro) and by the BTS (aerial metro) station in Chong Nonsi on the border between Sathorn North and Sathorn South.
Sathorn Avenue is bordered by office buildings, investment banks (RBS, Merryl[BK-Sathornroad] Lynch), very high-end residential buildings (The Met) and embassies (Germany, Australia, Singapore). The French alliance is also located there and the new French Embassy will be located next to Lumpini Park, just opposite the northern entrance to Sathorn Avenue.
The boundary between Sathorn North and South is at the intersection where an arch dominates which allows access to the BTS Chong Nonsi station. Near this arch, many office buildings are located, including the Empire Tower, one of Bangkok's symbols. By 2015, near the BTS station, Bangkok's sky will be dominated by the Mahanakorn project, a 310-metre skyscraper with revolutionary architecture.
The southern part of Sathorn Avenue is served by the BTS Surasak station. Near the station is the Saint Louis Christian Hospital, as well as the school of the same name. Sathorn South is also a privileged location for office buildings and standby condominiums.
Yennakart and Nang Lynchee
Yennakart and Nang Lynchee are two streets east of Sathorn Avenue. It is accessed mainly by different means (streets) on Sathorn Road, on Rama 4 Road, or from Rama 3 Road. These two neighbourhoods are part of a vast set of streets and alleys that lie between[BK-yenakart] four major avenues in Sathorn district.
The easy access to Yennakart and Nang Lynchee thanks to the proximity of Sathorn Road and the highway is offset by the tranquility of these two streets, which offer a typical setting just a stone's throw from the business district. There are very few buildings and the houses offer space, peace and quiet and the chance to enjoy a neighborhood where cars are not common. There are different types of houses in Yennakart and Nang Lynchee, so a house can be made of wood in the traditional Thai style while the neighbouring house can be modern and luxurious.
Silom Road is a street parallel to Sathorn Avenue served by both two BTS stations (Sala Daeng and Chong Nonsi) and one MRT station (Silom). Silom Road is a business district and a very famous tourist street. Thus, the Dusit Thani Hotel, at the northern end of the street, is known to have been one of the first hotels to welcome Westerners.
Silom Street itself is very lively day and night with an internationally renowned nightlife[silo-road]. Several restaurants and bars, renowned for their expatriate presence, provide a friendly atmosphere to this street. In addition, some quieter streets that join Sathorn Avenue are the refuge of some French or Italian gourmet restaurants and house some condominiums and high-rise houses.
Continuing on its southern part, Silom Street calms down and becomes a more residential and family district, especially in the small streets that start from Silom Road. A few luxury hotels have also established themselves along Silom Road.
Riverside (Saphan Taksin)
The BTS Saphan Taksin station is located in the southern continuity of Sathorn Road, on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. This proximity to this mythical river has attracted famous hotels to establish themselves, such as the Shangri-La Hotel or the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Facing the BTS station, on the other side of the river, stands the The River skyscraper, the city's second tallest building, which contains luxurious apartments and lofts with a Dantean view of the river that winds through the city.
A historic district that has kept its charm, the surroundings of the Saphan Taksin district (literally Pont Taksin, named after the Thai king who founded Bangkok) are alive and vibrant, mainly thanks to the river. Indeed, under the BTS station is an embarkation point where many shuttles leave to serve multiple piers along the Chao Phraya.
From this pier, you can easily access the new outdoor shopping centre called "Asian", which provides an idyllic setting by the river, for a shopping evening or a romantic dinner.
In addition, the current French Embassy, the oldest embassy in Bangkok, is located not far from Saphan Taksin, going up the river for a few hundred metres, next to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel.
Thonburi is a historic district of Bangkok. It is on this side of the river that the city was founded at the end of the 18th century before expanding considerably on the opposite side. Today, the BTS SIlom line crosses the river and opens four stations, soon to be six.
This extension of this BTS line has given back a welcome dynamism to this part of the city. Indeed, thanks to the aerial metro that is sinking into this side of the river, multiple condominium projects have been developed, mainly along the BTS line. The Neighbourhood is being modernized and revived.
Although on the other side of the Chao Phraya River, the Thonburi district benefits from the immediate proximity of Sathorn and Silom Road thanks to the BTS in 2 or 3 stations. In addition, Thonburi is only 15 minutes from Siam to change lines and go to Sukhumvit Road.
